Lasik eye laser surgery
Lasik surgery is the traditional eye laser procedure which we have performed since 1997. Our preferred technique is Nu-Lasik.
Lasik is the acronym for Laser-assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. Lasik surgery was developed in 1990 by Dr Lucio Buratto (Italy) and Dr Ioannis Pallikaris (Crete). It was a result of combining two previous techniques of keratomileusis and keratectomy.
How does Lasik work?
- The procedure uses an instrument called a microkeratome or laser keratome to create a circular flap by cutting approximately one third of corneal depth.
- The flap is folded back allowing the excimer laser, a cool light beam, to precisely remove tiny bits of tissue (ablation) to re-shape the eye surface.
- The flap is then repositioned back into place to cover the area where tissue was reshaped.
- There is a little discomfort during surgery but the recovery is virtually pain free. This is because, by cutting the cornea to create the flap, afferent sensory nerves are severed. This, however, also causes other effects.
