Feast Your Eyes - An article by Makiko Ryland

The list of foods below are not only DELICIOUS, but are also GOOD FOR YOU. Feast your eyes on some of these ingredients that could benefit your eye health.

Carrots:

Around 500,000 children worldwide are going blind every year because their diet and their mothers’ breast milk do not contain sufficient amounts of Vitamin A. Carrots are a great way to combat this vitamin deficiency. Half a cup of cooked carrots contains four times the recommended daily intake of Vitamin A.

It helps to maintain the surface linings of the eyes and the respiratory, urinary, and intestinal tracts. When those linings break down, bacteria can enter the body and cause infection. Hence, carrots can combat diseases all over the human body, not just in the eyes.

Cold Water Fish

Fish such as sardines, cod, mackerel and tuna are an excellent source of DHA. This is a substance that provides structural support to cell membranes, is recommended for dry eyes, treatment for macular degeneration, and sight prevention.

Green Leafy Vegetables

Greens such as Spinach and Kale are rich in carotenoids, especially lutein and zeaxathin. These carotenoids protect the macular from sun damage and from blue light.

Eggs

Eggs are rich in cysteine, sulfur, lecithin, amino acids and lutein. Sulfur-containing compounds protect the lens of the eye from cataract formation.

Garlic, Onions, Shallots and Capers

These foods are also rich in sulfur, which is necessary for the production of glutathione, an important antioxidant for the lens of the eye, and the whole body.

Blueberries and Grapes

These foods contain anthocyanins, which improve night vision. A cup of full blueberries, or a 100mg bilberry supplement should improve dark adaptation within 30 minutes.

Wine

Wine has been known to have a cardioprotective effect. It had many important nutrients, which protect vision, heart and blood flow. However, moderation is always important.

Goji Berries

Goji berries have been very popular in China for their vision improvement and properties. Modern scientists have found that the berry is able to reduce the time it takes for vision to adapt to darkness and improves vision under subdued light. Blind spots were reduced in patients taking goji. Its powerful antioxidant carotenoids and flavonoids may also protect against diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and cataracts.
